I’m not doing too badly with my new habits - the dishes, bins, bathroom, kitchen - so far. Which isn’t to say I manage them all every day but I am getting better.
Previously if I didn’t do them all in the evening I would just let everything slip. Now I just do them as soon as I’ve got a handy few minutes - and as none of them take more than a few minutes that gets me back on track.
But, this week’s habit is making the beds - which is something I really do want to get done first thing as I find it so depressing when they’re still unmade half way through the day or even worse at bedtime. Some research into insomnia claims people sleep better in a well-made bed and I really do buy that.
Not having been instructed in the art since the brownies - several centuries ago! - I have to say my bed making skills are pretty poor. I really would love to be able to make a bed really well - hotel standard - really quickly and I've found loads of fab tips on this bed making Pinterest board on how to master the art.
But back on planet earth where I am still baby stepping my way to the most basic domestic competence I will just aim everyday to:
- Straighten the sheets
- Puff up the pillows
- Shake out the duvet and put it back on and smooth it out
Whether you're a domestic dummy like me or a full blown domestic goddess do come and talk housework, babies, parenting and other stuff on Twitter and Google+.

Hope to see you there!
My mother-in-law made a 'what should be done every day' list for another of her daughters-in-law. She told me what was on it - the first item was making all the beds. I think she was trying to drop a clanger of a hint, as I make ours about once every other month....her hint didn't work though, as I still forget to make them. So I take my hat off to you!
ReplyDeleteI want one of your lists! I also let things slip every now and then and it takes me at least a week to get back on top of things... frustrating to say the least!
ReplyDeleteI make my bed every day. I can't handle an unmade bed. One thing that doesn't bother me so much are a few dirty dishes in the sink. I don't let them pile up, of course, but I know that would drive some people crazy!
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing isn't it - you have to work out what are the most important things for you and concentrate on those. I can handle enormous mess but simply hate dust :-)
Deletei had to click over b/c of those cats! i call mine "chicken" when she sits like that-don't you think they look lke they're sitting on eggs, lol? i used to make my bed, and now i don't. i smoosh the blankets all up so my cats can sit in them!
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with cats and beds? And how one cat can take over the whole bed I don't know but they can.
DeleteMy cats love sprawling on my unmade bed, too. But their very favorite game is to stay there while I make the bed, then they creep around under the sheets and duvet, chasing each other until they fall off the edge. It's hilarious, and actually gives me an incentive to make my bed every morning!

I have a daughter who also thinks this is a very funny game :-)
DeleteI am the worst at making beds! We don't make ours every day, though I love the way it looks, so I've been meaning to start. But you're right, three minutes tops means no excuses! :-)
ReplyDeleteTransforms the whole room doesn't it? And they do feel so much lovelier don't they when they're made?
